Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. At present, the area comprises 14 groups with more than one hundred fully dedicated researchers in close contact with top clinicians in the hospital. These research groups pursue a better and multifaceted understanding of the etiopathogenic mechanisms underlying a large variety of mostly adult but also pediatric neurological disorders including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, primary headaches, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and also neurosurgical and psychiatric pathologies. The area also integrates groups involved in neuroimaging, analysis and interpretation of high-throughput data, and gene therapy strategies to target inflammatory and neurodegenerative neurological conditions.

Group Leader: Carlos Molina Cateriano

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the stroke research group has continued its intense clinical research activity. Thus, the results of the RACECAT clinical trial led by ours and presented at the ESOC conference, have been concluded and presented, demonstrating the equivalence of the different patient referral protocols for mechanical thrombectomy. Likewise, the VALUE project has been launched, a European project funded by EIT Health for the improvement of intra-hospital processes aimed at creating value throughout the stroke process. In addition, we have consolidated the FLOWCAT project for an in vitro mechanical thrombectomy model, being a reference center for the training and development of 3D printing models of thrombectomy. In addition, the Colindruis study has been started for the validation of rotic vascular neurointervention. During 2020, the stroke research group created and coordinated the national registry of intracranial hemorrhages due to anticoagulants (ARICH Registry).
