Overview

The groups of this area aim to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. During 2020, we have developed basic, translational and clinical research in the field of the COVID-19 infection, including the virus characterization, the study of the mechanisms of pathogenesis, the diagnosis, the epidemiology, the prevention of the disease and the therapeutics and management options to improve the outcome of the infected people. Additionally, we have continued working on the development of strategies to diagnose, prevent and solve clinical problems related to other infectious diseases and in the characterization of the mechanisms of pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance of different infectious disease agents. Likewise, we have advanced in the research in critical care and sepsis as well as in aspects related to children’s infectious diseases and primary immunodeficiencies.

SODIR participated in several multicentric studies about coronavirus-2 disease (COVID-19) that lead to several publications. The sepsis research line has participated in studies about the use of new antibiotics for multidrug resistant bacteria. This line is specially interested on the identification of biomarkers for the early diagnosis and stratification of septic patient. The acute respiratory failure research line has two important publications in the field of nasal high flow therapy and weaning from mechanical ventilation.

SODIR has three ongoing funded projects (Health Institute Carlos III) in the area of lung transplantation and hemophagocytic syndrome. The third study analyzes the environmental contamination and aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in patients treated with nasal high flow.

SODIR is considered as an emerging research group by AGAUR. SODIR also has an important Clinical Research Unit that centralizes all the clinical trials that are carried out in the group.
