Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies

< Back

Overview

The Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies is a heterogeneous area composed by both translational and clinical research groups which cover fields such as immunology, respiratory and systemic diseases, pharmacology, clinical biochemistry, rheumatology, advanced therapies or transfusional medicine. Its main strength derives precisely from this heterogeneity and the complementarity of the scientific interests and expertise of the different groups, many of which are currently joining efforts and synergizing in a variety of collaborative research projects.

Group Leaders: Antonio Julià Cano and Sara Marsal Barril

During 2020, we initiated the coordination of the H2020 EU project DoCTIS, an international consortium aimed at discovering drug combination strategies to treat immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. As COVID19 was ramping in Spain, the group shifted it research to better understand the impact of this disease on rheumatological patients, identify genetic susceptibility as well as a new candidate drug for COVID19 severity. In 2020, Drs X. Michelena and R. Sanmartin joined the Group to lead the research on spondyloarthroparties and co-lead the research in chronic fatigue syndrome, respectively. Beatriz Martinez joined as lab technician. Dr H Borrell obtained a Rio Hortega stabilization grant. The Rheumatology Group has disseminated the translational research on COVID19 as well as introductory presentations of artificial intelligence at several scientific symposia. Two new lines, one incorporating single cell-RNAseq technology to the analysis of juvenile arthritis and one using multicomponent therapy to treat fibromyalgia have been initiated during 2020. A Clinical Trail Unit (Phase I-IV) in rheumatic disorders lead by Montse Sender has been established.
