Research on Aging, Fraility and Transitions in Barcelona : VHIR Annual Report 2020

Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM)

< Back

Overview

The VAM area was created to allow a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach in basic, clinical and epidemiology research. The ultimate goal is the innovation and transfer of solutions in a group of diseases that are closely interrelated and that constitute the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio-cerebrovascular disease, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and renal impairment. The VAM area includes preclinical and clinical research staff from our center, and collaborative work with groups of the highest international prestige. VAM area includes 8 groups: Cardiovascular Pathology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Nephrology, Ophthalmology (focused on retinal vascular disease), CIBBIM-Nanomedicine and Kidney Physiopathology, Medical Molecular Imaging, Neurovascular Diseases, and Research on Aging, Frailty and Transitions in Barcelona. All groups use an integrative tridimensional approach to generate knowledge on the mechanisms of diseases to generate new diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

Group Leader: Marco Inzitari

During 2020, the group has focused on ongoing projects: 1) DIALCAT (RIS3Cat, FEDER-ACCIÓ), an observational and intervention study on the relationship between diabetes and Alzheimer; 2) IMAGINE (Marató TV3), a RCT on motivational interviewing to improve stroke patients’ adherence to rehabilitation; 3) RECOGNISED (H2020), a multicenter study to explore retinal and cognitive dysfunction and common pathways in type 2 diabetes patients (WP coleaders); 4) FRONT STAGE (PIS-AES ISCIII), a three-arms single-blind RCT study to test the effects of a physical exercise intervention+transcranial direct current stimulation on pre-frontal metabolism and brain function; and 5) +AGIL (BCN Ciència-ICUB), a pragmatic multi-component integrated care intervention, aimed at managing and reducing frailty in older community-dwellers. The group has obtained new competitive funding (AECC Proyectos Estratégicos) for the “PROFIT Study: PeRsonalizing the approach to the Oncologic Frail Individual through Tailored assessment and intervention”. The international publications have been 15.
