Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. At present, the area comprises 14 groups with more than one hundred fully dedicated researchers in close contact with top clinicians in the hospital. These research groups pursue a better and multifaceted understanding of the etiopathogenic mechanisms underlying a large variety of mostly adult but also pediatric neurological disorders including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, primary headaches, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and also neurosurgical and psychiatric pathologies. The area also integrates groups involved in neuroimaging, analysis and interpretation of high-throughput data, and gene therapy strategies to target inflammatory and neurodegenerative neurological conditions.

Group Leader: Miquel Vila Bover

In 2020 we have reported an early infiltration of cytotoxic T lymphocytes in the brain of Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients that precedes the formation of alpha-synuclein (aSyn) aggregates and that could contribute to neuron cell death (Galiano et al, Brain). We have also developed and validated a UPLC-MS/MS methodology to measure dopamine metabolites and their oxidative intermediate species in the brain to study the process of neuromelanin production that occurs with aging, which increases the susceptibility of neurons to PD (Gonzalez-Sepulveda et al, ACS Chemical Neuroscience). We have also participated in the development of non-invasive tools to therapeutically reduce aSyn levels in the brain (Alarcón-Arís et al, EBiomedicine). Likewise, we have identified mechanisms of aSyn spreading between the brain and the gut (Arotcarena et al. Brain) and described novel pathological signatures of aSyn present in PD brains (Bourdenx et al, Science Advances).
