Overview

The area of Research in Surgery includes more than 50 investigators distributed in five groups of research focused respectively on general and thoracic surgery, cranio-maxillofacial surgery, spinal disorders, skeletal reconstructive surgery and musculoskeletal tissue engineering. Their activity combines basic and clinical research together with robotics and virtual surgical planning. Their aims are to advance in the understanding of the causes and mechanisms underlying surgical pathologies, to deliver new knowledge and better integrated patient-centered solutions, improving surgical care and outcomes.

Group Leader: Roberto Vélez Villa

During 2020 the Project “Translation of an allogenic tissue engineering product with msc from Wharton’s jelly for the treatment of osteonecrosis in paediatric oncology patients” led by Joaquim Vives completed the initial objectives for the first phase. We were able to obtain and characterize mesenchymal stem cells from ovine Wharton´s Jelly and verify their differentiation capacity into osteogenic, chondrogenic and adipogenic linages as well as their characteristic expression of surface markers. Most of the experimental surgeries in the pre-established preclinical ovine model of cylindrical bone defects were also performed. In 2020, we also finished the participation in the Parity Trial, an international multicenter randomized trial evaluating antibiotic regimens in tumor surgery. Roberto Vélez as national leader for the study and European LAR has played a pivotal role in the European participation.
