Overview

The groups of this area aim to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. During 2020, we have developed basic, translational and clinical research in the field of the COVID-19 infection, including the virus characterization, the study of the mechanisms of pathogenesis, the diagnosis, the epidemiology, the prevention of the disease and the therapeutics and management options to improve the outcome of the infected people. Additionally, we have continued working on the development of strategies to diagnose, prevent and solve clinical problems related to other infectious diseases and in the characterization of the mechanisms of pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance of different infectious disease agents. Likewise, we have advanced in the research in critical care and sepsis as well as in aspects related to children’s infectious diseases and primary immunodeficiencies.

Group Leader: Tomàs Pumarola Suñé

The Research Group of Microbiology focuses on the study of the microbiology aspects involved in the infectious diseases aimed at improving developing basic, translational and clinical research that could improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. We work with special interest in studying the mechanisms involved in antimicrobial resistance, molecular epidemiology, the microbiological aspects of bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal infections as well as in the microbial mechanisms involved on their pathogenicity.

The Research Group of Microbiology has developed projects aiming to elucidate the antimicrobial susceptibility, the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and population dynamics of clinically relevant pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Enterobacterales, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum, Staphylococcus aureus, respiratory viruses and Trypanosoma cruzi among others.

During 2020, the microbiology laboratory has been devoted almost entirely to the Covid-19 pandemic (diagnosis and characterization of SARS-CoV-2).
