Overview

The groups of this area aim to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. During 2020, we have developed basic, translational and clinical research in the field of the COVID-19 infection, including the virus characterization, the study of the mechanisms of pathogenesis, the diagnosis, the epidemiology, the prevention of the disease and the therapeutics and management options to improve the outcome of the infected people. Additionally, we have continued working on the development of strategies to diagnose, prevent and solve clinical problems related to other infectious diseases and in the characterization of the mechanisms of pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance of different infectious disease agents. Likewise, we have advanced in the research in critical care and sepsis as well as in aspects related to children’s infectious diseases and primary immunodeficiencies.

Group Leader: Pere Soler Palacín

On January 2020, the group created a new laboratory in the building of the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). In this new space two biologists are fully dedicated to the research on primary immunodeficiencies mainly focused on functional assays to validate uncertain genetic findings. The creation of a new laboratory is possible thanks to the collaboration of public and private institutions like ACADIP, the Jeffrey Modell Foundation, the Barcelona PID Foundation and the Ministerio de Economía y Empresa (MINECO).

As many others, the group has focused on the research of COVID-19 due to the current pandemic. We have work on the immunological and genetic background of severe cases of COVID-19 as well as on its impact in children and adolescents. Thus, the group has led the Copedicat project in Catalonia, is involved in the Escoles sentinella project and has act as a regional hub of the Covidhge consortium.
