Overview

The Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Genetics area is focused on the research on the congenital malformations and pediatric diseases. The Fetal Maternal Medicine group creates synergies through the combined work of basic science researchers and clinical investigators in the preclinical basis of placental insufficiency complications and congenital heart disease. The Bio-Cell Fetal group, recently incorporated, studies basic pathophysiological mechanisms of fetal and pediatric congenital malformations, while the Growth and Development group does research on pediatric endocrine diseases. There is also a Genetics Medicine group that combines genetic diagnosis and research and is pioneer in Spain.

Group Leader: Elena Carreras Moratonas

In 2020, the research group in Maternal and Fetal Medicine has consolidated its leadership in the study of COVID-19 in both low and high-risk pregnant women. This line of work is supported by national and international grants and numerous publications and clinical studies. Other active research lines of the group are prediction and prevention of hypertensive states of pregnancy and the prediction and prevention of preterm birth.

We have incorporated Dr. Pablo García-Manau to the Fetal Medicine Unit and Drs. Berta Serrano and Marina Catalán to the Delivery ward and Hospitalization Unit. We have reinvented ourselves to continue offering education courses in Maternal-Fetal Medicine through online platforms.
