Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies

< Back

Overview

The Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies is a heterogeneous area composed by both translational and clinical research groups which cover fields such as immunology, respiratory and systemic diseases, pharmacology, clinical biochemistry, rheumatology, advanced therapies or transfusional medicine. Its main strength derives precisely from this heterogeneity and the complementarity of the scientific interests and expertise of the different groups, many of which are currently joining efforts and synergizing in a variety of collaborative research projects.

COVID-19 had an important impact in the research of group during 2020. As IL-6 became one of the reference biomarkers for COVID-19, the immunology group with the core laboratory organized a biobank of sera samples linked to a database that has contributed to several multidisciplinary projects reflected in articles, some already published. The most notorious is the contribution to the identification of the first gene mutations associated to severe COVID (PMID, 32972996) and to the unexpected detection of IFN-alpha autoantibodies also in severe cases (PMID 32972996). This experience has further increase interest of the group in the immunology of host?pathogen interaction, a line that in 2019 already produced a watershed paper in collaboration with the ICU group and the epigenetic group of Dr Ballestar at the Carreras Research institute (Lorente Sorolla et al, 2019). Withstanding these new activities, research on primary immunodeficiencies was maintained, and the projects on autoimmunity resumed in the last quarter of 2020.
