Overview

The groups of this area aim to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. During 2020, we have developed basic, translational and clinical research in the field of the COVID-19 infection, including the virus characterization, the study of the mechanisms of pathogenesis, the diagnosis, the epidemiology, the prevention of the disease and the therapeutics and management options to improve the outcome of the infected people. Additionally, we have continued working on the development of strategies to diagnose, prevent and solve clinical problems related to other infectious diseases and in the characterization of the mechanisms of pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance of different infectious disease agents. Likewise, we have advanced in the research in critical care and sepsis as well as in aspects related to children’s infectious diseases and primary immunodeficiencies.

We expanded research in Severe Acute Respiratory Infection, particularly from influenza and other respiratory viruses to SARS-CoV-2 infections. We developed an assessment of the degree of evidence of clinical practice guidelines in different respiratory infections. Proposals of recommendations on controversial issues using MCDA methodology have been developed. In lung transplant, we assess cytokines and statins effect in donors/primary lung dysfunction and lead a multicenter collaboration assessing ICU admissions by Acute Respiratory Failure. We participated in different research networks such as the IRI-ID and the SMART study, assessing pk/pD of antimicrobials. We reported a RCT phase III on a Pseudomonas vaccine in mechanically ventilated adults. Validation of a PEEP-based VAE algorithm in pediatric ICUs was conducted in a multicenter study. Lastly, we are leading the research projects of WP5 in CIBERES regarding evidence-based medicine and guidelines in pneumonia. Several new systematic review and meta-analysis are ongoing with topics which were registered in PROSPERO.
