Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies

< Back

Overview

The Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies is a heterogeneous area composed by both translational and clinical research groups which cover fields such as immunology, respiratory and systemic diseases, pharmacology, clinical biochemistry, rheumatology, advanced therapies or transfusional medicine. Its main strength derives precisely from this heterogeneity and the complementarity of the scientific interests and expertise of the different groups, many of which are currently joining efforts and synergizing in a variety of collaborative research projects.

Group Leader: Francisco Rodríguez Frías

Our group has several lines that had produced significant advances: In big data analysis, a new line has started, stablishing reference intervals using laboratory generated massive data during previous years. In mass spectrometry, the translation of new drug and metabolite analysis methods, and a new line: protein biomarkers, wich has elucidated the structure of the idiopathic nephrotic syndrome-related protein ApoA-Ib, granted by a new project from Marató TV3. The Prostate Cancer line has stablished mechanisms & CSC models of multidrug resistance; discovered genetic alterations associated to new prostate cancer, and by analysis of publicly available interactomes, proposed that SARS-CoV-2 infection directly causes a deficiency in C1 esterase inhibitor, helping to explain vasculitis, hyperinflammatory state & hypercoagulation in COVID-19. In Viral hepatitis line: a “cell culture” model for a  potential gen therapy by mRNA silencing in Hepatitis B, and a simplifyed diagnosis strategy for hepatitis C,  implemented in all Catalonia. Participation in a european GWAS analysis searching for COVID19 infection severity factors (New England J Med).
